NFL Draft Scouting Notebook: Rueben Bain Jr.
Thoughts on one of the top prospects in the 2026 NFL Draft
I recently studied some film on one of the best overall players in the 2026 NFL Draft, Miami edge defender, Rueben Bain Jr. The three games of his from this season that I watched were against Notre Dame, Florida, and Florida State.
Let’s go over my thoughts on Bain, breaking down his strengths and weaknesses.
Strengths
The first two qualities of Bain’s game that I have to mention are his linear explosion and power. Whether he is in a two, three, or four-point stance, Bain can fly off the ball. He can instantly cover ground vertically when he works up the field. Bain’s get-off can overwhelm a tackle in no time. Bain is a physical player who is powerful at the point of contact. Not only is he able to generate power because he is explosive, but his technique is pretty sound as well. He has natural knee bend to play with low pad level. Bain has good hand usage. His strike timing, tight hands as he extends, and hand placement all enable him to create lots of knockback on contact. Through the rep, Bain keeps his hands active and can reset his placement. He has the grip strength to stack and shed.
There were instances where Bain timed up the snap well. Particularly, when he was aligned as a Wide-9 in a two-point stance. He would keep his eyes on the ball, ready to tee off as a pass rusher.
Bain mostly rushed with a plan and showed a nice variety of pass-rush moves. He rushed with speed and speed to power. He also used cross-chops, swipes, clubs, swims, dips, and rips. I loved how he also utilized tempo as a pass rusher, hesitating before converting to power. He also threw in some hesitations before using swipes and clubs. Bain used one and two hand swipes. He would use his inside shoulder dips and then rip on his outside speed rush.
Bain takes great rush angles. He can dip his inside shoulder on his speed rush and turn the corner on a perfectly tight angle while maintaining speed.
Bain was also very impressive as a run defender. It’s where his instincts show up. He plays with great discipline. Whether he is unblocked against a read option or on the backside of a run, he keeps good control, properly reading and reacting. Bain has great eyes and keeps them active against the run. After creating extension, he will two-gap. Bain takes sound pursuit angles in space. He can also set the edge. Bain has good lower body strength to break down into his anchor, holding ground.
Bain is a smart and aware player. He consistently plays with high effort. Whether it is rushing the passer or stopping the run, he plays hard to the finish. His motor especially showed up late in all three games I watched.
Weaknesses
Bain’s lateral movement skills are limited. While his linear explosion is elite, laterally, he lacks explosion. He does not have the flexibility to effortlessly change his direction. Bain hardly ever rushed to the inside of the tackle. His below average agility especially showed up stunts.
The part of Bain’s game that he must develop is his counters as a pass rusher. He currently lacks any sort of counter moves. When his initial rush gets stalled, he has no backup plan. Also, if an offensive tackle initiates first contact, Bain can pretty much be out of the play. There were some times when he converted to power, created initial knockback, but struggled to disengage.
Technically, Bain can be more consistent with his power rush. At times, he leaned forward and ducked his head into contact. He can also rise with his pads before contact, limiting his force capacity.
There were plenty of instances where Bain timed up the snap well, but not always. He can work on consistency jumping the snap, especially when he is in a four-point stance.
Bain seems to lack the desired arm length. Perhaps it contributes to why he struggles to finish sacks or tackles in space. From a production standpoint, he only has two sacks this season.
Final Thoughts
All-in-all, Bain is a highly talented prospect. He consistently impacted the pocket with pressure. The most important thing for him to work on throughout the second half of this season is developing his counter moves as a pass rusher.
Ultimately, Bain’s linear explosion, power, intelligence, and effort all provide him with a high floor as a top draft prospect. His eyes and discipline against the run and variety of pass rush moves and great angles rushing the passer give him the upside to be a dominant every down player.
